The combined nature reserve and landscape conservation area "Schwetzinger Wiesen-Riedwiesen" covers a 650-hectare area of the Rhine lowlands. A mosaic of valuable habitats and quarry ponds can be found here. Hedges and willow bushes structure the species-rich lowland meadows, which have been shaped by the Rhine and are used extensively: Rare plants, some of which are threatened with extinction, such as the Siberian iris, the medicinal hair-stem and the edged leek live here, as do animals such as the black kite, oriole, bluethroat, red-backed shrike and kingfisher, as well as the tree frog, moor frog, natterjack toad and spadefoot toad.
