In the 18th century, the Mannheim court with its summer residence in Schwetzingen employed a number of outstanding musicians during the reign of Elector Carl Theodor. Their interaction was unique and impressed contemporaries. People travelled from all over to experience the musicians of the Mannheim court. For example, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who first came to Schwetzingen in 1763 as a seven-year-old child prodigy in the circle of his family and then in 1777 and 1790 as a conductor and musician.
