Description
Elector Carl Ludwig had asparagus cultivated in the palace garden from 1668. Garden director Johann Michael Zeyher continued the tradition in 1820. With the first asparagus market in 1894, an asparagus market ordinance was initiated. Schwetzingen's reputation as an asparagus metropolis began around 1910 with the special cultivars "Lukullus" and "Meisterschuss".
